Can I help manage my ADHD?
ADHD can't usually be cured, but it can certainly be managed so that people of all ages can get on with doing everything that other people do.

There's a lot you can do to help yourself and, in fact, you will need to be actively involved in the management of your condition. There will be plenty of people around to help you, including doctors, other health professionals, family, friends and employers - it's all about teamwork.

The treatment approach best suited to you will depend on several factors, including the severity of your ADHD. Treatment will usually involve a number of components, including some of the following:

  • Education to help you and those close to you to understand and manage your ADHD better
  • Lifestyle changes such as cutting back or giving up alcohol or drugs, and taking up regular exercise
  • Medication prescribed and taken appropriately to improve many of the symptoms of ADHD by 'normalising' the balance of brain chemicals
  • Behavioural management through developing strategies for dealing with the ADHD behaviours that limit your success
  • Psychotherapy or counselling to deal with co-occurring problems such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, substance abuse or relationship difficulties
  • Therapy to support your family in understanding ADHD
  • Vocational counselling to help you achieve success and satisfaction in the workplace
  • Joining a support group to find out how other adults deal with their ADHD
