The most effective way to manage ADHD is with a combination of
- educational structure and support
- behavioural and /or psychological management
- medication
There is no single educational strategy, practice or plan that can be uniformly applied to all school children with ADHD. Children with ADHD are individuals and have learning needs as diverse as all other members of a class.
One thing for certain, however, is that a collaborative approach to managing ADHD should be taken - this means teamwork! The outcome for a student is much better when everyone and everything - teachers, parents, family, doctors, other health workers, and possibly, medication - all work together. It is beneficial to meet a child's parent(s) to gain insight into the child's strengths and areas of vulnerability at home, and to discuss any treatment or interventions initiated by their doctor following diagnosis.
A holistic approach to ADHD also aims at treating any related problems a child may have, such as learning difficulties or psychological problems. It is important to integrate the management of these issues so the key players in the child's life better understand their needs.
